Hopson Plantation
It was on 28 acres at the Hopson Planting Company of Clarksdale, Mississippi that the first cotton crop to be commercially produced entirely by machinery, from planting to baling, was grown in 1944. The soil was prepared and the crop seeded and cultivated by machines. Weeds were eradicated by flame and the crop was harvested with a mechanical picker.

Unfortunately, the plantation has become obsolete over the years due to continuing advancements in agricultural technology. Today, Hopson’s goal is focused more on the preservation of the culture and heritage of the Mississippi Delta rather than on making profits from cotton.

Today, Hopson Plantation exerts itself in a number of ways including turning the old commissary into a social club and renting sharecroppers’ shacks (after a great deal of renovation) to Delta visitors. The future might even see the renovation of one of the old farm buildings for a sound stage and studio.
