Civil War Sites

Several skirmishes were fought in Coahoma County during the Civil War, and by 1862 both Friars Point and the community of Delta were occupied by Union soldiers. Friars Point was shelled by Union troops and a cannonball is still embedded in the wall of one of the historic homes there.

|
In 1863, Union General Ulysses Grant tried to invade Vicksburg via Mississippi’s interior waterways, notably the Yazoo Pass on the north end of Moon Lake. The gunboats became mired in the swamp, a failed effort registered on an historic marker on Mississippi Highway 1.
